If You’re Not Winning, What’s Your Excuse?

For many of us, the biggest hindrance to our progress and eventual success is our own selves. This often happens unconsciously, hence our tendency to blame our lack of progress and failure on something or someone else.

How many times have you heard someone complaining about-

“How they weren’t born into a rich family”
“How they didn’t receive quality education”
“How they don’t have the right connections”
“How they’ll never have enough capital to push their idea ahead”
“How their boss passed them over for a promotion.”

There’s always something or someone standing in their way. The thing is, these something’s and someone’s are always their own limitations.

Success is not predicated on the right set of circumstances from birth. Yes, it would be great to have rich parents, stellar schooling, and connections up the wazoo, but even for the few who are lucky to fall into these brackets, success is not guaranteed.

Time to Get Real With Yourself

We have to eventually reach a point where we are 100% honest with ourselves. Do we really want to succeed? And if so, are we ready to do what’s necessary to get there?

I understand, it’s easy to have a brilliant idea or strategy, only to put it on the backburner because “I don’t have enough experience” or “I’m not good with social media marketing.” This is zero risk behavior. After all, you can’t fail if you’re not doing anything at all.

But what if you decided to get more experience and learn all you can about social media marketing? Or even better yet, say fuck it and go ahead with your idea despite your weaknesses. You can learn by trial and error if you are truly committed. Just lean on your strengths and work hard to minimize your weaknesses.

You should be like the 6-year old kid who wants to be 7, and the 13-year old kid who can’t wait to be 18. Yes, kids are ignorant of the hardships that age can bring, but they are fearless, and we have a lot to learn from them.

If you’re still on the train of ‘if’s’ and ‘buts’, think of your life 10 years from now when you’re still in the same position you are in. Depressing right?

Growth is seriously tough for all of us, but it is necessary.

So what’s holding you back from going after your success? What’s your excuse?

  1. I am again here to learn something very new. I absolutely have no doubt that we complain more than we work hard to put things in order. The reason that happens is because we fear to take the blame for who we have become in life so as a way of trying to appear innocent we decide to lookout for some factors to support our faults.
I always think the best way to fully discover our potentials is to get ways of getting connected to the people that are better than us so that we can bench mark to what extent our potentials can go.
Thanks Davina , I am now going to share this with all my readers.

    1. Well said Mwebya, fear seems to be the driving factor. And I agree that our circles should always include more successful people, that can be a great motivator. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. We are nothing more than a bunch of belief system. Our Current Belief system = Our Current Reality = Our Current Manifestation. Nobody else or circumstance is holding us back. When we manage to get rid of our fear, doubt or limiting belief that is holding us back, we will be able to achieve everything we wanted in our life. http://goo.gl/fplT4Y

  3. Success… comes after several tests. Great success… comes after many great tests… No two ways about it, do we? Just got to be brave and bite your way through. One quote I hold dear to and would like to share it here… “You are closer to success than you think.”

  4. Well-written, Davina. Beliefs are thoughts that can hold people back from making progress, and until they get help to remove these barrier, or even first recognize them for what they are, they’ll remain stuck.
