Ignite That Sweet, Sweet Passion!

The word Passion is often thrown carelessly around, yet few people actually know what it means or what it feels like to possess a passion for something or someone.

Passion evokes fervor and intensity, joy and fury, excitement and resentment but most importantly devotion and dedication.

passion

When you begin to think about starting your own business, the number one thing on your mind should be ‘Will I love what I am going to do?’ If your answer is no, it may be time to rethink your idea and come up with something that you will enjoy doing.

The truth is, being an entrepreneur is not easy— note that I do not say being an entrepreneur is impossible. As an entrepreneur your business will consume your time and your energy, and the only thing that will keep you working consistently hard is the love for what you are doing.

Chinese American Cellist Yo-Yo Ma put it simply:

‘Passion is one great force that unleashes creativity, because if you’re passionate about something, then you’re more willing to take risks.’

The Secret Passion Formula

Another thing about passion is that it exudes from every pore of your body once it consumes you. Have you ever seen someone talk about their favorite car or sports team and witness the joy that engulfs them, and in the same breath sit through the most exhausting tirade regarding their dead end job and cruel boss?

How is it possible for one person to act so different? The answer is Passion! When you are passionate about something the feeling is overwhelming and more often than not contagious.

This is why you can delight in the presence of a Chef who chooses to go on for hours about a recipe they just created, despite a lack of interest in culinary arts.

When it is time for you to sell your idea to an investor and/or sell your product to a target market, your passion will sell even before the object of your passion will.

The formula is straightforward- if you see someone happy don’t you want to partake in whatever it is that is making them happy? Therefore, if people can get to witness the joy you have when discussing your product and its benefits, what will hinder them from being a customer?

Money Vs Passion

When your sole focus as an entrepreneur is monetary returns, more often than not your business will fail. Let be me perfectly clear, I do acknowledge the importance of money as a way of sustaining your small business while serving as a motivational factor.

However, I know that in the beginning when all you can think about is the survival of your business, passion and not your desire for revenues will keep your business afloat.

And after a while the survival phase will pass, and not only will you love having your own business, you’ll be reaping the monetary rewards as well.

What Can I take Away From This?

Passion is what drives you when you a running on empty. It is the same fuel that will burn in you the desire to succeed, and the motivation that will give you the strength to do what ten people cannot.

When you have love, drive and ambition for what you are doing and who you are doing it for, how can you fail? How can any naysayer stand in the way of your dreams when your body is practically bursting with the power and energy of your passion?

There is no doubt that passion is the key to your success!!

  1. Splendid piece, Davina. Thank you for sharing. I’ve always envied people with great passion and along with that, great devotion. Somehow, I find difficult to discover things I am passionate about the same way. Hopefully with time, it gets easier.

    1. Hi Veronika,

I do agree that passion and devotion are admirable. However, some of us discover our passion later in life- don’t let that discourage you 🙂

      Asante,
